Festival of Stocks #46

July 23rd, 2007

I’d like to take this time to welcome you to the 46th Festival of Stocks. This week (July 15 to July 21) there were 12 entries (1 of which was down at the time of writing this article - Sorry, Personal Finance Blog Articles).

Stock Analysis

SNX: A Look at the Synnex 10Q posted at Stock Market Beat.

A detailed analysis of Synnex, for which Stock Market Beat discusses accounting changes, low profit margins, and how the company doesn’t wish to disclose information it isn’t legally required to. It sure doesn’t sound like a company I’d be willing to buy.

Google (GOOG) Sell Off Offers Opportunity; Strong Technical Support at 500 posted at Self Investors.

Tate takes a good look at the recent Google sell off and how this might make for a good entry. Some of the negatives; high number of new hires and the effect of the bonus plan. Google still posted great revenue growth but I personally believe that while it may be a great company, it is not undervalued and so much future growth is already factored into the stock, that when it does miss projections by just a little bit the stock takes a nose dive.

General Investing

Stock Purchase Update - 7/16/07 posted at My Wealth Builder.

Super Saver provides an update to several stocks he bought in the last several months. In that the last 6 to 12 weeks he has gained 10.2% for a total gain of $1,782! Also included in the update is a link to more detailed analysis of these stocks conducted by Investment Jungle.

Retirement - The Real Cost of Procrastination posted at Wealth Building World.

An article that outlines some of the reasons you should start investing early and how long it takes to acquire $1 million. It has three simple lessons that may benefit you if you aren’t a saver.

Stocks as Income Investments posted at The Real Returns.

A neat article that explores the dividend yield of SPY (an ETF) if it was purchased in 1994. It goes into some discussion about the benefits of long term investing and how yields can increase over time, a common theme of many dividend growth investors.

Asset Allocation Application in Unit Trust Investment posted at KCLau’s Money Tips.

A great article that discuses asset allocation and contains an Asset Allocation Guide. The site even has some links (and pictures) for popular asset allocators. I’ve never used an asset allocating program before but it’s probably something I should do.

ETF Exchange Traded Funds Are a Great Investment Strategy posted at SuferSam.

Surfer Sam writes an in-depth article discussing what an ETF is, how good some have done (like QQQQ with its 23.10% return in the last 12 months), and advantages of ETFs over other investments.

What’s Asset Allocation? posted at Wealth Building Lessons.

Seems like more than one site was discussing asset allocation this week. WBL believes that the average investor should at least understand asset allocation as a tool for diversification.

How To Find A Good Investment posted at INTJ Personal Development.

INTJ writes about different criteria that make an investment attractive. I like the basic quote, “… invest in either your own busines, or someone else’s that you understand.” So true!

Roth IRA Contributions versus Traditional IRA Contributions for Renters posted at The Skilled Investor’s Financial Planning Blog.

An extremely detailed comparative analysis of Roth IRa and Tradional IRA. Highly recommended if you’ve been wondering which is the best route to take for renters…

How We’re Rebalancing Our Investment Portfolio: Modifying Our Asset Allocation posted at The Digerati Life.

An article discussing how to improve a portfolio through simplicityaand asset allocation. I notice that the proposed cash levels are going to decrease from 32% to 10%… I’m assuming the author is bullish, but at the same time is “hoping for some kind of reasonably sized market hiccup to transpire sometime in the near future!” Haha. PS. Due to an environment of rising interest rates, I don’t know if now is the best time to jump into REITs. Any long term REIT holdings I have, I will be keeping, but I’d be cautios to add any further REITs without first checking the debt retirement schedules. If interest rates increase 1.50% over a few years, if a REIT was averaging 7% interest rates, this can result in a 21% increase in interest rates (1.50 / 7)… certainly no small number. There are some bargains out there… but look at long term debt retirement schedules.

Well, this concludes the 46th Festival of Stocks! It was a pleasure to host!! You can submit your investment blog articles for the next Festival of Stocks with the submission form. You can also check out future hosts (and past) on Festival of Stocks main page.
